Job Information

Florida International University College of Law Library (Law Library) seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to join our team as the Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Law Librarian.

As a member of the Digital Initiatives department, the Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Law Librarian is responsible for overseeing the Law Library's digital collections, electronic resources, access, and authentication, and providing research and reference services to the FIU Law community. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining the scholarly output of the FIU College of Law by overseeing the Law Library's digital collections, disseminating, and promoting those collections through different platforms, and administering the Law Library SSRN, perma.cc, HeinOnline, and other content management systems. Duties also include monitoring and reporting the output and impact of the Law Library digital collections, by developing and implementing strategies that will maximize discoverability and scholarly impact. The Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Law Librarian is also responsible for overseeing the Law Library's electronic resources, by developing and maintaining the A-Z List and integrations with library systems. Additionally, duties include ensuring seamless access and authentication to electronic resources via Open Athens or other authentication protocols.

The Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Law Librarian works closely with faculty, journal editors, and other members of the FIU community to develop and enhance FIU and Law Library Digital Collections. Specific responsibilities include curating, preparing, and posting content to the Law Library and FIU repositories, tracking faculty scholarship, coordinating cross-platform scholarly identity, and securing, as needed, copyright permissions. This law librarian provides training and support the use of scholarly impact and management tools such as Perma.cc, ORCID, Google Scholar, HeinOnline Author Profiles, FIU Discovery/Vivo, bepress Digital Commons, and other digital collections management systems. This law librarian is also responsible for developing digital resources, evaluating digital collection usage, and maintaining vendor relationships.

The Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Librarian is a member of the Law Library's Library Services team, providing research and reference services to members of the College of Law, University, and other patrons of the Law Library. Reference librarian duties include participating in scheduled reference desk rotation, creating and maintaining guides and FAQ using the LibApps platform, teaching legal research as part of the Law Library's Instructional curriculum, and providing, as relevant, specialized research and lectures. As a member of a forward-thinking library valued for its responsive and evolving services, the successful candidate will have practical librarianship experience, with a strong foundation in digital collection oversight and services, and dedication to innovation in provision of law library services.

Responsibilities

The Digital Collections and Scholarly Services Law Librarian's responsibilities include:

Digital Collections

  • Develops, maintains, and coordinates the curation of the FIU Law institutional repository under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Legal Information Services.
  • Identifies and implements in-house digitization projects and develops metadata strategies for digitized materials, in both historical and born-digital collections.
  • Coordinates and ensures interconnectivity between the FIU Law repository and author profiles with the University's scholarship discovery systems.
  • Develops collaborations with students, faculty, staff, campus, state agencies, libraries, and community partners to lead innovative digital initiatives that support Law Library and University's mission to improve and expand access to legal materials.
  • Oversees the Law Library's website and ensures cross-platform linkage and integrations.
  • Supports all facets of resource description to facilitate discovery of the Law Library's digital collections.
  • Curates, organizes, and facilitates discovery of digital collections.
  • Creates and maintains accurate metadata in the shared state-wide catalog, Law Library website, FIU Law's institutional repository, FIU's scholarly communications portal (FIU Discovery), and in other discovery platforms and tools.
  • Implements projects to create access to collections and resources through the web pages, online guides, and digital exhibits.

Electronic Resources

  • Enables access and authentication to the library's digital resources by ensuring accurate URLs and enhanced discoverability of purchased and subscribed resources.
  • Ensures access to online content through methods that are easily and intuitively discoverable by patrons.
  • Assesses, identifies, and implements methods to improve discoverability, ease of use, and accessibility of electronic resources.
  • Serves as system administrator for LibApps and Open Athens systems, oversees electronic resource management via LibGuides A-Z List and Open Athens portals.
  • Function as first-line support of technical and systems related issues as they pertain to patrons' access to the library's resources and act as a liaison between library staff and vendors to ensure a successful resolution. This includes proactive monitoring and troubleshooting of e-resources with vendors, Open Athens or equivalent authentication portal, and library staff, as needed.
  • Coordinates training, professional development, trials, and implementation of electronic resources and digital collections.
  • Monitors content changes and updates access and authentication portals and content management systems.
  • Monitors and reports on the access and use of electronic resources. Participates and recommends tools and reports to capture and communicate electronic resource analytics.
  • Reviews and updates electronic resource workflows and policies.
  • Supports electronic resource management workflows; acts as backup to the Assistant Dean for Legal Information Services.
  • Supports electronic resource record management, portfolios, connectivity, subscriptions, and batch loading of vendor-supplied records; acts as backup to Collection Services department.
  • Supports updating and compliance with licensure terms and information for electronic resources and integration of license metadata into integrated library and LibApps systems; acts as backup to the Collection Services department.

Library Services / General Librarianship

  • Provides reference services to support the mission and scholarly pursuits of the FIU community, responding to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Supervises student and/or temporary staff in the Digital Initiatives Department.
  • Serves as a liaison to FIU Libraries Systems and FIU DoIT departments on issues relating electronic resources and institutional repository discovery and access/authentication.
  • Explores new and emerging methods and technologies supporting digital collection and electronic resource curation and maintenance. Identifies, evaluates, and stays current with emerging trends, resources, practices, and standards in electronic resource management, usage statistics, data management, access, and discovery to enhance library services.
  • Identifies new resources and maintains current awareness services related to law librarianship, legal education and pedagogy, and substantive legal subjects.
  • Contributes to the College of Law, the profession and grows professionally through substantive involvement in committee work, research, publishing and/or participation in professional organizations at national, regional, section, and local levels.
  • Creates and maintains research guides, specialized course resources and research resources in print and electronic formats.
  • Serves as back-up for Assistant Dean for Legal Information Services.
  • Participates in collection development activities and makes recommendations in keeping with lowering the cost of education principles.
  • Fill in for other law librarians and provide back-up supervision for FIU Law Library functions as needed.
  • Provides instruction via programs and workshops; guest lectures in FIU Law and FIU courses.
  • Teaches for-credit courses as assigned and budgeted. Law Librarians teach for-credit FIU courses as Adjunct Professors and are compensated separately for those courses.
  • Other duties as assigned or directed to fulfill the mission and strategic goals of FIU, FIU Law and FIU Law Library.

Qualifications

  • JD from an ABA accredited institution, or foreign equivalent. Candidates in pursuit of a terminal degree in the practice of law will be considered.
  • MLIS from an ALA accredited institution. Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent degree) from an ALA-accredited library or information science school.
  • Relevant experience in at least two of the following practice areas: digital and/or electronic resources management, library management systems, digital collection curation and initiatives, digitization and archive protocols, and/or metadata management.
  • Familiarity with the types of digital collections/resources typically found in an academic research library.
  • Experience with metadata creation.
  • Experience with access and discoverability of digital resources.
  • Experience with digital collections and electronic resource management platforms and tools, such as web page creation and LibApps systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to create digital library resources, such as research and resource guides, through web pages, LibApps, video, graphics, and other formats.
  • Knowledge of online legal research databases and tools, including Bloomberg Law, Lexis, and Westlaw.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct in a variety of formats and modes, leveraging modern pedagogical techniques, including distance online synchronous or asynchronous, hybrid or blended, and face-to-face instructional modes.
  • Ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to excel both independently and as a responsible team member in a collaborative and efficient work environment.

  • Experience with collaborative library content management systems, web content management systems, and understanding of content and data management workflows.
  • Knowledge of non-MARC metadata formats, standards and schemas utilized in providing research and scholarship support services in a digital library environment.
  • Working group or committee experience in integrated library systems.
  • Experience in graphic design for library resources, services and/or outreach.
  • Foreign language fluency.
