DIRECTOR OF UNDERWRITING (COMMERCIAL)

ARC Group has an immediate opportunity a Director of Underwriting with commercial and auto experience to join a national carrier in their south offices (greater Ft. Lauderdale, FL). This is a highly visible executive-suite position, ideal for someone who wants to play an impactful role in the company's strategic multi-year growth plan. Relocation is available!

The Director of Underwriting is a thought leader responsible for driving profitable growth within transportation and other segments. This role involves overseeing underwriting processes, managing a high-performing team, and developing strong relationships with stakeholders. This role directs the overall underwriting strategy, operations, and policy development across product lines and will ensure profitability, growth, and efficiencies that align with the company's goals and objectives. This role will focus on establishing financial control, guidelines, tools, administrative standards, and best practices.

The Director of Underwriting will research competitors and market conditions to develop and maintain risk selection criteria and methods that support sound risk management. The ideal candidate will have a background in underwriting commercial auto and possess knowledge in other segments of insurance. Director of Underwriting Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrating leadership by creating an environment that fosters teamwork, values diversity, and which supports and respects all team members, internal and external customers, and vendors
  • Participates with others in Senior Management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy, marketing, and business strategy
  • Oversee the underwriting process, evaluating risks and ensuring adherence to company policies and industry regulations.
  • Exercise oversight for the underwriting of new and renewal business in accordance with all the company guidelines, procedures, and service standards
  • In coordination with President, revision, and evaluation of Reinsurance program
  • Large line referral underwriting
  • Development of short and long term product and program strategies
  • Establishment of policies and analysis to support product development
  • Support development and maintenance of agency, broker, and client relationships to ensure positive and profitable outcomes
  • In conjunction with actuaries and filing team, development, filing and evaluation of rates and forms
  • Reviews, directs, and monitors the application of underwriting policy and pricing including periodic audits of company files
  • Maintenance of policy issuance quality control
  • Coaches, leads, and develops Underwriting management and Underwriters including training of new hires
  • Analyze data and metrics to make informed underwriting decisions, optimize portfolio performance, and achieve financial objectives.
  • Implement and enhance underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures to adapt to changing market conditions.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field. Advanced degree and relevant certifications (i.e. CPCU, ARM, AU) are a plus.
  • 5+ years or senior leadership in the commercial insurance industry
  • Proven experience in commercial auto insurance underwriting, with a focus on transportation risks.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a high-performing underwriting team.
  • In-depth knowledge of insurance regulations, industry best practices, and emerging trends in the commercial auto sector.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to make data-driven decisions and drive business performance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
