Description

The School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a year long, Adjunct Instructor position in the (MSCD) for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. The position would support the core mission of the Computational Design program and include teaching up to four courses in scripting, generative design systems, and AI for design. The position may also involve advising a small number of masters thesis students over the course of the year. All courses will be offered within the AY24/25 academic calendar:

We are looking for an Adjunct Instructor to teach graduate level courses in computational design. The MSCD program promotes a shared emphasis on critical technical practice, where faculty and students in the program draw from fields including computer science, robotics, human-machine interaction, machine learning, art, and science and technology studies to illuminate emerging potentials as well as unforeseen consequences of new technologies in design.

The position entails building upon existing courses - Generative Systems for Design (62-706), and Scripting & Parametric Design (48-724) - and the possibility to develop one or two new seminars related to computational design with a particular focus on AI in design, and the built environment.

We are seeking a faculty member who will:

  • Teach primarily in the Computational Design program but also interact with students across various School of Architecture graduate programs, including MS in Sustainable Design, Master of Architecture, and Master of Advanced Architectural Design.
  • Be familiar with classic and emerging approaches to generative design.
  • Be familiar with scripting for design based applications.
  • Be familiar with emerging trends in machine learning and AI.
  • Encourage creative and critical thinking among students as they engage with design technologies.
  • Commit to contributing to, and promoting a culture of equity and inclusion, including in teaching, research, creative practice, and service.
Qualifications

While we welcome all applications; preference will be given to those that directly address some combination of the following:

  • A terminal degree in a design-related field (e.g., Bachelor and/or Master of Architecture) or equivalent professional experience
  • An advanced degree related to computational design.
  • Prior experience teaching or working professionally in a design related field with an emphasis on computation
  • University-level teaching experience-either full-time, adjunct, or visiting scholar-at the undergraduate and graduate levels, or equivalent professional experience
  • Additional areas of expertise in one or more of the following areas to help deliver the course curriculum:

Application of computational techniques in built or theoretical projects

Ability to bridge the technical aspects of computer science with the creative aspects of design based education.
