The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Environmental Laboratory Technician to support the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory in the Natural Resources Division.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in field sampling events, sample receiving and calibration of field equipment. The position requires basic knowledge of scientific principles for the analyses of turbidity, PH levels and the ability to calculate solutions and ratios. The candidate must be proficient in computers and have a basic understanding of the process to enter data into our LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System). The position demands tolerance to work under heat and rain conditions while sampling outdoors. This position has emergency responsibilities to support the Resilient Environment Department in times of emergency activation.


General Description

Assists in all sampling events by preparing sample kits and calibrating field sampling equipment with considerable independence. Receives and disposes of samples as required.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in chemistry or closely related field.

Requires six (6) months experience in an environmental laboratory performing sampling or analysis of air, water, domestic or industrial wastewater or soil or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.


Preferences

Bachelor Degree in Environmental Sciences, or closely related field.
Six (6) months experience working under a NELAP certified laboratory.
Six (6) months experience using LIMS.
One (1) year experience of GIS.
One (1) year experience of data analytics.
Six (6) months experience preparing reagents or calibrating field equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Collects environmental data in the field related to sampling (water conditions, weather, any other details and comments related to sampling); performs field analyses for various physical parameters; performs chemical analyses of environmental samples; enters data and results in a laboratory information management system.

Calibrates field and laboratory instruments; performs maintenance on field sampling gear and field equipment; resupplies sample containers; cleans/washes glassware; performs general lab housekeeping.

Calculates solution concentrations, ratios, reproducibility and other aspects related to quality control.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office or laboratory equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
